Calling Australian Allies: Help Stop Uranio halt a uranium mine in Salamanca, Spain

Then have sent these two photos of their struggle.

YLNM members Stop Uranio are working to stop Australian company Berkeley Energia’s planned uranium mine in Retortillo, Salamanca, Spain. They believe this unwanted mine is being backed by money from Australian pension funds and are calling for solidarity from the people of Australia to stop it. Read on, spread the word!

22nd June 2017.

Stop Uranio want people in Australia and in the whole world to know, that Berkeley Energia Ltd, the Australian mining company seeking to exploit Uranium in their region, Retortillo, is allegedly being funded by Australian pension funds.

Stop Uranio want people paying into these funds to know that Berkeley intend to open an uranium mine that is against the will of local people, and has doubtful profitability.

Then have sent these two photos of their struggle.

Berkeley belongs to the Apollo Group of companies, (see Berkeley’s name among the companies of the group), although Berkeley’s website does not recognise this connection.

Stop Uranio questions the honesty and integrity of Berkeley Energy Ltd, which has ties to UraMin, the company embroiled in a financial scandal surrounding the purchase of a Namibian uranium mine by French multinational Areva.

“Some directors, financial and mining research offices related to UraMin work or have worked for Berkeley,” says a Stop Uranio spokesperson.

Members of Stop Uranio, are deeply concerned about the potential negative impacts of Berkeley’s proposed Uranium mine on Retortillo and the surrounding area. The company’s efforts to mine are currently in the permitting phase and local people fear they will get the permissions they need.

“Let us hope that justice prevails, because I fear that the Spanish administration is yielding before the interests of Berkeley and will soon give them the necessary authorisations. With that permit they will be free to destroy the environment of the area,” said a Stop Uranio spokesperson.

Stop Uranio are keen to connect with allies in Australia and others with experience of Berkeley Energia.
