“It makes no sense to invest in companies that undermine our future. We need an apartheid-style boycott to save the planet” – Desmond Tutu, 2014
Hinged on this premise, the Fossil Fuel Divestment movement urges organisations, institutions and individuals to demonstrate climate leadership and end their financial support for the fossil fuel industry. Already, a growing number of universities, cities, religious organisations and institutions are making the moral and political decision to divest.
Glasgow University just became the first university in Europe to divest from Fossil Fuels. After 12 months of campaigning, led by the Glasgow University Climate Action Society and involving over 1,300 students, the university court voted to begin divesting £18m from the fossil fuel industry and freeze new investments across its entire endowment of £128m. A bold and admirable move… let’s hope others follow Glasgow’s lead.
