A dangerous phenomenon is spreading globally, that, while going largely unnoticed, represents a direct threat to human rights and the environment: global water grabbing.
By water grabbing we refer to the wide variety of phenomena characterised by the removal of water resources as a commons, openly available for everyone and freely enjoyable, and the alienation of its control from people and communities to the benefit of a private or public actor driven by speculative purposes.
The Watergrabbing platform is promoted by COSPE in collaboration with CICMA (Comitato Italiano Contratto Mondiale sull’Acqua) with the purpose of researching, informing and raising global awareness about exploitation of water resources all over the world that threatens the dignity of local populations, indigenous peoples and citizens, while producing social impoverishment and environmental degradation.
Our platform aims to be a tool for mobilisations and campaigns promoted by social movements, local committees, NGOs and Associations that are engaged in the struggle against water grabbing and the alienation of human right to potable water and to sanitation
Water grabbing is a many-sides phenomenon, such as unsustainable farming in Kenya, new big dams in Brazil, water privatization in Ireland or mining contamination in El Salvador. That is why Watergrabbing.net warmly welcomes the partnership with the Yes to Life, No to Mining Campaign: mining activities all around the world are damaging water basins and jeopardize local communities’ water resources through poisoning and contamination of the aquifers that threaten peoples’ and environment’s lives. Consequently, we proudly stand with YTLNTM in their efforts to defend environment and communities from this threat.
