On Sunday 25th February , YLNM member ContraMINAcción -a galician network of more than 20 organisations affected by mining and support organisations- joined the demonstration that said “No to the copper mining project in the communities of Touro and O Pino (A Coruña)”. The goal was to support the Plataforma Mina Touro-O Pino Non which is the last platform that have joined the network against destructive mining in Galicia.
Red and white, these colors identify the neighbours’ struggle against the copper mining project of Touro and O Pino and invaded streets of Touro, while hundreds of people who demonstrated invited everyone watching them going by to join the cause.
Many people and organizations from all over Galicia came to Touro, and very specially dozens of tractors of the local peasants decorated with banners with eloquent messages against the mine.
The delegation of ContraMINAcción was there, representing its 20 member organizations and with their banner “We are not going to be stopped, we are not going to be silenced”.
This mining projects have nothing to do with sustainability, they lack on transparency, and the mining policies are very bad and great business for a few. The people in the neighborhood of Toro, O Pino and Arinteiro know very well what it means. The old copper mine that closed in 1986 still drains acidic waters and left multiple negative consequences of which neither the local administration nor the autonomic took charge of and you can see and feel contamination all over the place. “The decision is to stop the mine and not stop the mobilizations until reaching the goal”, ended the manifest read by young members of the community.
YLNM sent a support message as well, on behalf of its 60 member organisations and 9 international coordinators.
